An early Challenge catalog illustrated large portable engines available in 6,9, 12, and 15 horsepower sizes. Challenge place the exhaust port in the side of the cylinder rather than in the head, pointing to this as an ideal design. A water pump and cooling tank were standard equipment on the portable engines. Prices ranged from $400 for the 6 horsepower up to $825 for the 15 horsepower model.
Organized in 1867 as Challenge Windmill & Feed Mill Company, this firm built many different items, specializing in those items given in the company’s trade name. About 1901, gasoline engines were added to an already extensive line showing sales of over $500,000 per year. The little 1 1/2 horsepower engine is an early example of the Challenge line. A unique offset steel frame was used in this portable style.
