Leland, Faulconer & Norton Company

Leland & Faulconer is a relatively unknown firm from whose roots basically sprung America’s two most pretigious motor cars – Cadillac and Lincoln. The firm began as Leland, Faulconer & Norton in 1890 as a machine works in Detroit. In 1894 it was reorganized as Leland & Faulconer, and soon became renowned for its very high quailty work. By 1896, the company was manufacturing both steam and gasoline engines, primarily for marine use.

The L & F compnay reveived its first big auto,otibe contract in 1899, when Olds Motor Works ordered 2,000 completed 3 horsepower engines. L & F produced these, then developed then developed, a new 10 horsepower engine for Olds, but Olds wasn’t interested. Meanwhile, in 1899, the chief engineer being a young man named Henry Ford. This company produced few vehicles and eventually failed in 1900. However, it was reorganized in 1901 as the Henry Ford Motor Co.
