Olin Gas Engine Co.

With patent No. 569,564 of October, 1896, the Olin horizontal engines became officially etablished. Olin filed this patent in August, 1894. As with the early vertical style J.W. Ruger Mfg. Company offered the engine as their own, even though Olin was apparently operating his own copany in the same city at the same time. A logical explanation might be that Olin sold shop rights to Ruger on the 1896 patents. Regardless of the legalities., this particular Olin engine wa available in size sizes from 10 to 35 horsepower. To further complicate the Olin operation, Hiscox’ Gas, Gasoline, and Oil Engines of 1898 notes that Olin engines were being built simultaneously by Olin Gas Engine Company of Buffalo, New York, and Titusville Iron Works of Titusville, Pennsylvania. Extensive patent research gives substance to the conclusion that these engines were in fact built simultaneously. Thus remains a confusing arrangement of Olin, Ruger, and Titusville engines all being built at the saem time, and probably under a shop license arrangement from Fred C. Olin.

history

Fred C. Olin applied for hsi first gas engine patent on February 11, 1893. Assuming that Olin’s research and development of the design took at least several months, it could be presumed that a prototype engine probably was built sometime during 1892. Patented in October, 1896, under No. 596,386, the Olin vertical engine was available in 1, 2 1/3, 5, and 8 horsepower sizes. The identical engine was also offered by J.W. Ruger Mfg. Company of Buffalo, New York, through an arrangement long since obscured by time.
