Extensive records of Providence Engineering Works from 1883 to 1908 can be found at the Smithsonian.
From the merger of Providence Steam Engine Co. and the Rice & Sargent Engine Co in 1899, Providence Engineering Works was created. This merged company specialized in manufacturing steam engines. Around 1921, the name was changed to Providence Engineering Corp. Due to the arrival of electric motors and internal combustion engines, the business began to decline. The business was liquidated in 1955.
