It is believed Witte began their Simplicity line of engines around 1911. These were the first to carry the walking-beam valve mechanism that characterized the line until around 1923. The company claimed that their engines paid for themselves and that this made them practically free. The engines could also come with an added saw or mud pump. During the 1930s, they began offering diesel engines.
This company was started by August Witte around 1870. Ed Witte, August’s son, built their first crude gasoline engine in 1886. By 1894, gas engines would become the company’s primary focus. Witte Engine Works filed its articles of incorporation on April 13, 1896. The company was dissolved in Jun of 1944 due to failure to pay taxes.
