Appleton Manufacturing Co.

The Appleton line also included engines of 4, 6, 8, 10, 14, and 18 horsepower. All sizes were of the same general design. Drop forged connecting rods were used on the 1 1/2 to 6 horsepower engines but steam hammered forgings were used for the connecting rods of the larger models. The cylinder, head, and base were all cast separately – a big advantage when repairs were necessary.

history

Established in 1872 as a farm equipment builder, Appleton made wood saws, corn shellers and other items during the early years. Increading demand prompted the addition of new equipment lines. Appleton’s exact date of entry into the gas engine business is unknown, although a 1913 catalog indicated an extensive line. The smallest size was this 1 1/2 horsepower model, with a 3 horsepower size being identical in all respects except for physical size.
