The comapany’s exact entry into gas engines seems to have begun about 1915 – it bears an uncanny resemblance to something from the many engine factories at Waterloo, Iowa. During 1915 Sandwich began advertising their own engine line, noting that it was available in sizes from 1 1/2 to 10 horsepower.

Incorporated during 1867 as Sandwich manufacturing Company, this firm dated back to the 1840s. Augustus Adams opened a small foundry at Elgin, Illinois, in 1840, moving this operation to Sanwich, Illinois, in 1857. Adams subsequently went on to become a prolific inventor, specializing in various farm equipment. His best known inventions were the hinged-bar mower and a host of corn sheller designs. By the 1890s farmers came to know sanwich and Adams as being nearly synonymous.
