Ajax Iron Works

By 1905, the Ajax line had grown to include sizes ranging form 5 to 65 horsepower in a single cyliner style and 60 to 120 horsepower in the tandem model. As with many oildfield engines, a crosshead was used, thus eliminating all side thrust on the piston and doing away with subsequent wear. The sideshaft equipment epitomized high quality engine design. These engines were built for extended overloads and long periods of unattended and uninterrupted service.

history

Founded in 1877 to build steam drilling engines for nearby oilfields, Ajax Iron Works quickly grew int a major supplier to the oil field industry. The original firm was a partnership known as Harmon, Gibbs & Company, but was incorporated under the Ajax title in 1892. Although steam engines were the main product of the new company, gas engines were added in 1895. This 1901 Ajax engine exemplified the rugged design and pleasing appearance of the Ajax engines.
