Alexander & Crouch engines were of four-cycle design and available in 1,2, or 4-cylinder styles, giving a power range of 4,8, and 16 horsepower. By 1906, the Alexander 7 Crouch partnership dissolved, resulting in two separate firms – Chas P. Crouch & Company and James Alexander, both of Chicago, Illinois.
Around 1904 Alexander 7 Crouch began building a unique vertical engine designed primarily for marine and automotive use, but also adaptable to other power requirements.
