Walter J. McVickr appears to have played a major role in engine design at Alma Mfg. Co. Beginning in 1903 McVicker received U.S. Patent 726,731 covering the McVicker Automatic engine. Other patents include 743,915 on November 10, 1903; 887,502 on May 12, 1908, and 951,833 on March 15, 1910. McVicker Engineering Company was formed in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1910. During the following years, McVicker was an eminent figure in gas tractor design.
In 1913 Alma Mfg. Co. was reorganized as Alma Motor Truck Company. The firm became Republic Motor Truck Company in 1914 with the incorporation of this entity in 1916. By 1919, Republic claimed to be plagued the company during the 1920s however. Acquisition of Linn Mfg. Corporation of New Work in 1928 broadened the line with the addition of the Linn half-track vehicle. Finally, in 1929 a merger with American-LaFrance formed in LaFrance-Republic Corporation.
