Compression ignition engines began receiving a lot of attention by 1895. Two main schools of thought emerged – the full diesel design and the hot bulb, surface ignition engines. American O.K. Odorless Engines, built by American & British Manufacturing Company of Bridgeport, Connecticut, injected kerosene fuel into the igniting chamber at the proper instant but required preheating prior to startup.
The American & British engines were available in sizes from 2 1/2 to 18 horsepower. The governor adjusted the stroke of the injection pump to match the selected speed. Manhattan Transit Company of New York City acted as selling agents for American engines. This particular engine is a 1903 model.
