American Gas Engine Company operated the Dirigo Engine & Machine works in Portland. Incorporated in 1902, the company built vertical engines up to 16 horsepower under the Dirigo name. Eight sizes were built, beginning with the 1 1/2 horsepower model. Dirigo engines featured make-and-break ignition. Another feature of this early style was a fuel tank built into the cast iron base, eliminating the need for a separate fuel tank and piping. Each engine carried a two-year unconditional guarantee.
An interesting A-frame design was used for this American
gasoline engine of 1903. It used an unusual T-head
design with a mechanically operated in take valve.
Very little advertising appears for this engine, although
— it is thought that it remained on the market for several
years.
