American Well Works

Established in 1868 and incorporated in 1881, American Well Works built a large business with well drilling equipment and supplies. Stationary steam engines became an early part of the business. An exact date of introduction for this American gasoline engine is unknown. The 1904 style was avilable in 4,6, 12, 15 and 22 horsepower sizes. All were of the same general design.

American Well Works portable engines were built in 6,12, and 15 horsepower sizes. The big 15 hosepower model operated at 250 RPM and weighed 4500 pounds. A large battery box was mounted beneath the cylinder to accommodate the Edison storage batteries then in use. An ignition dynamo was available in the lieuof the batteries. to complete this self-contained outfit American Well Works supplied a large cooling tank, circulating pump, gasoline pump, adn other accessories. American also was building gasoline tractors as early as 1904, continuing them for several years.
