Associated Manufactureres Co.

Iowa Dairy Separator Company was organized in 1896 to build a hand-operated cream separator. These were successful and the firm soon became a major Waterloo industry. In 1909 the company registered the “Chore Boy” trademark for a new series of gasoline engines. Associated Manufacturers was organized and incorporated in 1910 as a result of the merger of Iowa Dairy Separator Company and other firms. About the same time the Sherman & Smith Company came into the Associated fold. This firm has been building engines in Independence, Iowa, but was in financial straits.

history

About 1912, Unite Engines company of Lansing, Michigan, was formed to sell engines and other items. The united engines were quite similar to the corresponding Associated models. Whether Associated or United nameplates were attached, all manufacturing took place in the Waterloo area. Eventually, the company concentrated on cream separators, although when the firm was sold to Hamilton Engineering Company in 1946 they were still building magnetos and several other items.
