An improved Atkinson “Cycle” engine using a single piston built was annouced in 1886, and widely sold in England. Several noted engineers of the time blieved the Atkinson, “Cycle” engine using a single piston was announced in 1886, and widely sold in England. Warden built the engine for a couple of years, beginning about 1889. One of these engines is displayed at the Edison Institute, Greenfield Village, Dearborn, Michigan. Several noted engineers of the time believed the Atkinson “Cycle” engine to be the ultimate in efficiency. Its linkages and many bearing points were subject to excessive wear, and this factor probably hastened its early demise.
James Atkinson of England displayed his “Cycle” engine at the 1885 Inventions Exhinition in London. this unique engine had a power impulse for each revolution of the crank, but was of the four-cycle design with intake, compression, expansion, and exhaust taking place through a complicated linkage system. This design was also patented in the U.S.
