Atlas Engine Works

The April 1907, issue of Power illustrated the general design of Atlas engines. They used hit-and-miss governing. Production indlucded a wide range of sizes. Despite producing high-quality engines, Atlas was forced into bankruptcy by the failure of U.S. Motors Corp., of which it was a part. In late 1912 it was sold to a new firm, Lyons-Atlas Co. for $1.5 million.

Atlas had beginnings dating back at least to the 1880s as a stationary steam engine builder. In early 1900, U.S. Patents 642,621 were granted to Matthew R. Moore and assigned to Atlas. These were the first of many Atlas patents covering internal combustion engine designs. The April 1907 issue of Power illustrates the general design of Atlas engines. They used hit-and-miss governing. Production included a wide range of sizes.
