Automatic Machine Company

Designed especailly for hoists, pumps, and other applications, the Automatic engine of 1912 was a takeoff from marine design. Many builders specilaized in marine and launch engines, but also adapted some styles to stationary uses. The two-cycle design gave inherent simplicity, plus the advantage of an excellent ratio of weight to horsepower.

Automatic Machine Company manufactured gas engines in 1912 and then metalworking machinery from 1921-1941. During this time they manufactured the Coulter shaping planer. In 1941, the company was called Automatic Machinery Manufacturing Co and in 1942, it became the James Coulter Machine Co. James Coulter was a machine designer for the Automatic Machine Co, Many of their machines, including engines lathes, planers, and multi-spindle drilling machines bore the name “Coulter” beside the company name.
