Bates & Edmonds Motor Co.

Early Bates & Edmonds vertical engines used a cast A-frame design somewhat similar to steam engine practice. This gave easy access to the connecting rod and also resulted in exceptionally rugged construction. A unique overflow-type fuel mixer is obvious. Available also as a plain engine, the Bates & Edmonds pumper shown here was available in a 1½ horsepower model having a capacity of 900 GPH. The
4 horsepower size was capable of 2,000 gallons per hour.

history

Beginning about 1900, Bates & Edmonds introduced a line of vertical and horizontal engines. The vertical engine shown here is a 1908 model, with a notation that the company had already built and sold 10,000 engines. At this time the line included sizes from 1½ to 25 horsepower. This vertical engine was available in 1½ and 4 horsepower sizes.
