The Bethlehem large unit engines of 1920 were among the first to embody unit-frame design, whereby it could be furnished in cells of two to eight cylinders, These vertical engines ranged in size from a thousand to 5,000 horsepower. The cylinders were actually supported by the cylinder heads, and everything from the heads to the bed plate was sandwiched between huge tie bolts. history

Bethlehem Steel Co was founded in 1857 and remained in business until its dissolution in 2003. It was one of the largest steel-producing and shipbuilding companies for most of the 20th century. In 1857 an iron-making company was organized in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and later named the Bethlehem Iron Company. The owners of the iron company founded Bethlehem Steel Company in 1899 and five years later, Bethlehem Steel Corporation was created to be the steelmaking company’s corporate parent. They declared bankruptcy in 2001 and the final dissolution was in 2003. All of its remaining assets were sold to International Steel Group.
