Bruce-Macbeth Engine Co. of Cleveland, Ohio produced Meriam engines that could be used on the electric generating set. A heavy duty clutch on each engine permitted the use of a single engine on light loads, but gave the option of using both engines on demand. An obvious problem was to make each engine carry its share of the load. No details concerning the company’s solution to this problem can be found. It is likely that Meriam engines used a satisfactory arrangement to provide accurate governing of this unique generating system.
Bruce-Macbeth was founded in 1909 by the merger of Bruce-Meriam-Abbott Co and the Macbeth Iron Co. Bruce-Macbeth also built complete producer gas power plants as illustrated here. Producer gas was made by drawing a mixture of air and steam through an incadescent bed of coals in a brick lined generator. The gas thus created passed through a cooling and cleaning apparatus before being delivered to the engine. Merian engines also featured two complete and independent ignition systems, each consisting of a magneto, coil, distributor and spark plugs. Under this system each cylinder received two speaks at the proper moment.
