Organized in 1925, Caterpillar Tractor Company resulted from a merger of Hold and Best interests. Holt dated back to 1892, and C.L. Best Company was organized in 1910. Best’s immediate predecessor was Daniel best who had been building steam traction engines, gas engines, and various other equipment since 1885.
Caterpillar’s diesel engine of 1931 was widely used in their own crawler tractors, with many more being specified in various industrial applications. The company has continuously built and continues to maintain an extensive line of multiple-cylinder diesel engines- a line so extensive as to nearly require a book in itself. Since these are not generally considered collector items at the present time, extensive history of the Caterpillar engines has not been attempted.
