Cummins Engine Co.

Cummins had built his first steam engines at the age of 11 and in 1911, Ray Hurroun, a race car driver, asked him to join his pit crew after learning of his reputation. After Cummins made some suggestions on improving speed, the car won the first ever Indianapolis 500.

Cummins Engine Co was founded in 1919 by Clessie Lyle Cummins, with backing from banker William G. Irwin. The company earned its first profit within three years and in three more, they offered the industry’s first 100,000-mile warranty. The company had opened a manufactuing facility in Scotland in 1956 and by the 1960s, they had a presence in 98 countries. By 2017, Cummines Inc was a multinatinoal Fortune 500 company.
