Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach developed one of the first gasoline-powered engines in 1885. Although Daimler was, by 1901, a leading engine builder in Germany, surprisingly little is known of their activities at that time. However, a 1901 advertisement indicates that Daimler was indeed present in the American market. Their marine engines of the time were available with hot tube or electric ignition. Daimler may have farmed out the manufacturing to an American firm, or the engines might have been shipped as parts and assembled in the United States. This avoided substantial import duties on finished engines.
In 1888, The Daimler Motor Company was formed under a partnership between Gottlieb Daimler and William Steinway. Around 1898, the company became the Daimler Manufacturing Company. They were a boutique American automaker from 1898 to 1907. A fire destroyed the factory in 1907, including eight completed Mercedes, and 40 others under construction, drawings, and machinery. They initially planned to rebuild but due to the financial panic of 1907 and the start of the American automotive industry, the company folded in 1913.
