An unusual “headless’ design has been discovered. Aside from this, it is of the same general appearance as other Dempster engines of the 1910-1920 period. Numerous companies built “headless engines. This term signifies a one-piece cylinder and head, eliminating a troublesome gasketed joint. The downside was that the valves were usually in cages, held in place with an overlapping nut, or alternatively, rendered accessible by removing two cast iron plugs threaded into the cylinder

Charles B, Dempster bough one-third interest of a retial shop in 1878, which sold, installed and repaired windmills and water pumps in the area. Dempster Mill Mfg Co operated from 1885 to 2009. They were one of the longest running wind-powered water pump manufacturers in the US. The business had three partners, Charles Hart. the salesman, J. H. Dempster, who ordered parts and handled finances, and C. B. Dempster, who took care of manual labor, and installing and repairing windmills and pumps. .
