Isaac Rice founded the Electric Boat Company in 1899. The purpose of the company was to build submarines for the US Navy. In 1923 this firm and New London Ship & Engine Company appeared as partners in the diesel engine business.The company was reorganized as General Dynamics Corporation in 1952 under John Jay Hopkins. They remain a leading manufacturer of submarines for the US Navy today.
