history

Gerald B. Allen started a machine shop in 1852. The company manufactured riverboat steam engines. In 1879, he renamed his company Fulton Iron Works. When the demand for steamboat engines died down, the company shifted its focus to the new market for stationary power plant engines. They soon gained a reputation worldwide for the manufacture of more advanced, diversified presses as well as mining equipment and soon international exportation began. In 2000, Fulton began operating as a wholly owned subsidiary of South Side Machine Works, Inc.
