Gardner Convertible Steam & Gas Engine Co.

For the best of both worlds, Gardner offered complete equipment for converting an ordinary slide valve steam engine into a gas engine. Under the Gardner system, changing back and forth form steam to gas power was as simple as shifting a lever. Although 10, 13 and 25 horsepower models were in regular production, a 1907 advertisment notes that other sizes could eb built to order.

In addition to their convertible models, Gardner also built these single cylinder engines in 15, 20, 25, and 30 horsepower sizes. Obviously of two cylinder design, these engines used hot tube ignition – a system that required virtually no maintenance except for replacement of an occasionally ruptured ignition tube. Twin cylinder engines of 30, 40, and 50 horsepowr sizes were also aviable, they used an identical design to the single cylidnder models.
