Hess Machine Works

A very poor newspaper image is all that is known of the Hess marine engine, built in 1909, and perhaps for a time on either side of that date. The company specialized in structural steel and ornamental iron work, beginning its business in 1902. Hess also built button cutting machinery. At the time, Muscatine was a major center for pearl buttons, made from millions of clam shells harvested from the Mississippi River.
