Henry Hettinger started the Hettinger Engines Company in 1898. He was a Bridgton mechanic that invented and built the Hettinger gasoline oyster dredge winding machine. He was also responsible for the Hettinger gasoline engines used extensively along the east coast in the early 1900s. After starting his company, he manufactured the first gasoline engine built in Bridgeton. He also invented and manufactured many machines used in canning, and a four-cylinder engine as well as an airplane in 1909.
