Xenophon Caverno founded the Kewanee Private Utilities Company in 1897. They manufactured water, electric, and sewage systems. Although Kewanee specialized in waterworks equipment, pumps, and pumping engines, the company also built at least a few stationary or portable engines lor various power uses. Portable Elevator Company acquired the company in 1949 and they shut down in 1951.
