In 1917, Nordberg manufactured the world’s largest steam hoist which was purchased by Quincy Mining Company. In 1944, they manufactured the largest diesel engine that has ever been built in the United States. The United States Maritime Commission used it for its Victory ship.
Nordberg manufactured steam engines, large diesel engines, pumps, hoists, and compressors for the mining and quarry industries. They were founded by Bruno V. Nordberg and Jacob Elias Friend in 1886. Nordberg had previously worked for E. P. Allis & Co. They bought Busch-Sulzer Diesel Engine Company in 1946 and in 1970, Nordberg was acquired by Rex ChainBelt Inc. and was to become a division of this company. In 1989, Nordberg was again acquired by Finland Rauma Corporation which then later merged into Metso around 1999. Metso then closed Nordberg’s Milwaukee factory in 2004.
