history

Otto teamed up with Eugen Langen during the early 1860s. Their inverted vertical atmospheric engine virtually destroyed any interest in Lenoir’s noncompression engine previously introduced. With the formation of N.A. Otto & Cie. on March 31, 1864, the world’s first company devoted exclusively to building internal combustioin engines was organized. Otto’s developments finally led to introduction of the Otto Sinlent engine in 1876–the “Silent” was undoubtedly more than a figure of speech, since sompared to the noisy atmospheric engine, this new horizontal, four-cycle style was ndeed “silent”. Within a year of tis introduction, the Otto Silent was in America.
