On September 6, 1892, the company filed for protection of “Hercules”, “Improved Hercules” trademarks as applied to their engines. Their application noted that these marks had been in use since June 1891, a date which corresponds exactly with Hoyt’s application. Despite this flurry of activity, no living proof of the various Hercules engines built by Palmer & Rey has mamifested itself.
A study of the Patent Office Gazette indicates that Palmer & Rey was quite active in the gas engine business, beginning in 1891. In June of that year, George E. Hoyt applied for Letters Patent concerning a unique governing device which acted on the echaust valve. By making the valve lift infinitely variable and putting this sytem on the governor, the speed could thus be adjusted to suit the load. At no load, the exhaust valve would barely open, while on full load it had maximum lift. Patent No. 502,255 protecting the Hoyt design was issued on July 25, 1893.
