Portage began building engines about 1900, but definitive information has eluded our research. A 1906 advertisement refers to their four-cycle reversible engine. However, it remains unknown how they achieved this end. Particularly in the 1890-1930 period, there were thousands of gas engine patents, but usually, the subject might have been a fuel pump, a fuel mixer, or something as mundane as the cooling fin arrangement, or the method used to attach a water hopper to the engine cylinder.
