Reliance Engineering Company was apparently the last of several different corporate entites to produce the Olds gas engines. Originally organized as P.F. Olds & Son, the comapny was reorganized as Olds Gasoline Engine Company, then as Olds Motor Works. At this point, R.E. Olds was still control. His wealthy backers eventually set the stage for R.E. to “resign” and from that point on, Olds engines were built without the benefit of R.E. Olds.
Seager Engine Works remained at the helm until Rumely’s 1912 takeover of the operation. With the fall of the house of Rumely, Seager apparently continued in operation, remaining in control until about 1924. At this point Reliance Engineering COmpany emerged – one of their catalogs had the audacity to note that the Olds System of manufacturing “allows us to start on our 36th year with the unqualified endorsement of 150,00 satisfied Olds users.” The fact was that R.E. Olds has long since departed the gas engine business, preferring the challenge of buildiing The Olds engines from Reliance Engineering Company were identical to the Type A engines from Reliance Engineering Company wer eidentical to the type A engines built by their immediate predecessor, Seager Engine Works. As laate as 1948, Olds repair parts were available from Melling Forging Company of Lansing.
