Reliance Iron & Engine Co.

A distinctive new Sta-Rite engine design made its debut in 1908. Throughout the entire line, this design prevailed, with the company rejecting the notion of offering an endless variety of vertical, horizontal, air-cooled, and water-cooled styles. Reliance continued in operation until 1911 when it was reorganized and incorporated as Sta-Rite Engine Company of LaCrosse, Wisconsin. The move to LaCrosse was undoubtedly predicated on the desires of the new owners. Sta-Rite continued building engines of virtually identical design until 1917. Shown here is a 1908 Sta-Rite portable model. Neither the team nor the driver seems to be excited about waiting for the photographer.

history

Organized in 1906, Reliance set up shop somewhere on Geneva Street in Racine. An advertisement in the December, 1906, issue of Gas Power noted that “numerous sizes and styles” were availavble, but neither this particular advertisement nor those that followed gave any specifics. From the outset, Reliance christeded their new engine as the “StaRite”, noting that it had “none of the annoyance and expensive repairs that go with complicated engines.” By 1908 the company adopted an entirely new design.
