During 1916 Sharples Separator Company announced their new Double-Ignition gasoline engine. As the name implied, Sharples engines carried two separate and completely distinict ignition systems. From a 1916 issue of The Gas Engine it is learned that a conventional low tension magneto was situated on one side of the cylinder, with a separate high tension battery system being provided for starting as well as a backup to the igniter. Four sizes were announced initially, ranging from 2 1/2 to 9 horsepower. After a few 1916 advertisements, nothing further is known of their efforts in the engines business.
The Sharples Separator Co . was founded in 1881 by Philip M. Sharples. It manufactured and sold cream separators. It closed in 1933 due to the effects of the Great Depression.
