A 1905 advertisement front is the only evidence we have located regarding Smith & Mabley. No illustrations of their engine have been found. In 1905 there were literally hundreds of marine engine builders. Many of them would never see 1906, and only a fraction of these would still be alive in 1910.
Smith and Mabley was founded in 1900 by A. D. Proctor Smith and Carlton R. Mabley, his brother-in-law. They were an import company for European automobiles. Around 1903, they joined A.L.A.M, after a lawsuit, and a founding member of the S. A. E., G. Edward Franquist designed a four-cylinder engine. This engine was used on motorboats for racing.
