In terms of total production, Fairbanks, Morse & Company and International Harvester Company took top billing over all other engine manufacturers. While it will probably never be possible to ascertain the intensive research certainly does permit an evaluation of early engine design. within this parameter, Stover Manufacturing & Engine Company certainly ranks among the best of all.
D.C. Stover began manufacturing various articles at Lankark, Illinois in 1862. By 1866 he had moved to Experimental Works. Stover was a prolific inventor, developing carious improvements on windmills, barabed wire, wire forming machinery, bicycles, stoves, and many other items in addition to engines. By 1887 the Stover plant housed the largest windmill factory in the estate worth well over $1,000,000.
