United Factories Company

Selling their engines under the “Unito” trademark, United Factories Company was yet another jobbing house that apparently wasn’t an engine builder at all, even though their engines were masked with the Unito title. A 1913 catalog indicates that the company offered a great many different farm implements and supplies, with engines comprising only one part of a many-faceted line. One example is the 1 1/2 horsepower Unito air cooled engine shown here. Priced at $24.75, it was the only air cooled model offered by the company. The design was nearly identical to a similar 1 1/2 horsepower Sandow engine concurrently marketed by Sandy McManus, Incorporated of Waterloo, Iowa. Every indicator points to Waterloo Gasoline Engine Company as the actual builder of the Sandown engine, therefore this firm was proabbly responsible for actually manufacturing the Unito air cooled model shown here.
