The business ostensibly began as a foundry and machine shop. At the time it was not uncommon for manufacturing machinists to also have their own foundry. Chances are that the company also had its own pattern shop. It is also likely that Sterne Bros, also did General Machine Work, meaning those custom jobs and the repair work that came to their door.
Sterne Bros. Company was incorporated in 1889 by three brothers of that name. By 1901, Sterne Bros. was listed as an engine builder, but to what extent is unknown. Hoisting engines are known to have been built by 1904, or perhaps earlier. The engine line continued, and it is likely that the company also continued with various kinds of machine work. In 1915 the company was reorganized under the title of West Coast Gas Engine Company. Engine production continued until 1925, and parts were available until 1940. After World War Two, the remaining parts, patterns, and drawings were destroyed.
