Weighing 6,405 pounds, the 1212 Diesel was equipped with 18.4-30 rear and 7.50-16 inch front tires. Additional front and rear ballast raised the total test weight to 10,435 pounds. Twelve forward speeds ranging from 1.0 to 16.0 mph were provided in the selective gear fixed-ratio transmission. Using seventh gear, the two-hour economy run at 53.2 maximum available drawbar horsepower saw a pull of 3,795 pounds at 5.26 mph with slippage totaling 5.47%. Fuel economy was posted at 12.56 horsepower hours per gallon. The ten-hour run at 75% pull saw an economy of 13.27 horsepower hours per gallon under a load of 42.94 drawbar horsepower. Also recorded was a pull of 2,897 pounds at 5.56 mph with slippage totaling 3.97%. During one of the drawbar runs an engine timing gear failed. Subsequently, several gears were replaced, along with the fuel injection pump. After lapping the valves, the test continued. Otherwise, no repairs or adjustments were made during 50 V2 hours of operating time. The 1212 Diesel was equipped with the company’s own four-cylinder, 219 cubic inch engine. Rated at 2,300 rpm, it used a 3,939 x 4.500 inch bore and stroke. Operating at rated engine speed, 65.36 maximum PTO horsepower was observed, as was an economy of 15.22 horsepower hours per gallon of fuel.
