Oliver 1855 tractors were available in Row-Crop, Wheatland, and Ricefield models. In addition, the 1855 was available with a front-wheel-assist system as an option. The 1855 was also available with a gasoline engine, this model was not tested in Nebraska. Many options were available for the 1855; these included Powerjuster rear wheels, dual-speed PTO drive, category III three-point hitch, wheel guard fuel tanks, and a factory-installed cab. A divided exhaust manifold terminated at the turbocharger on the 1855 tractors. This design split the firing sequence to drive the turbine more smoothly, regardless of engine speed. Oliver’s advertising brochures of the period note that the gasoline engine was optional for the 1755 and 1855 tractors, leaving the obvious connotation that the diesel was emerging as standard equipment. The “55” series types of diesel used a so-called ‘slim-line’ injector which was only 3/8 inch in diameter. This design, combined with extremely high injection pressure, helped to increase fuel atomization, and consequently, provided cleaner burning of the fuel. The six-cylinder engine had a displacement of 310 ci.
