1896-1897

One of Otto’s first tractors was this 42-horsepower, single-cylinder giant built in 1896-97. The engine had a 12-inch bore and an 18-inch stroke. One can get an idea of the size of this machine by comparing it to the man on the operator’s platform. Spur gearing was used through the entire drive train. The linkage on the right side operated a clutch pulley mamechanismor belt work. Although cumbersome and heavy, this was one of the first successful gasoline tractors. The engine alone weighed 14,500 pounds —something over 345 pounds per horsepower.
